Creating character with a #dwelloctoberstudio affordable apartment bathroom refresh

We're excited to share this affordable bathroom refresh #dwelloctoberstudio recently designed for a local apartment owner. For this project, we teamed up with Lowe's, exclusively using Lowe's products to transform the bathroom. Lowe's is the perfect choice when sourcing materials for an apartment renovation like this because they offer a great selection of design-conscious fixtures and finishes at an affordable price point. Another benefit of shopping at Lowe's is that most items are in stock at local stores or can be delivered quickly, which is an important consideration for renovations on a short timeline, such as this project.

This apartment did not have a lot of existing character to work with, so we opted for a darker, moody aesthetic to make the space feel warmer and more welcoming. Our goal was to choose more durable higher quality materials that would withstand the test of time as this is a rental, all while keeping the renovation budget in check.

We were inspired by this beautiful mauve paint color from HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams called Hushed Auburn. We applied vertical shiplap paneling to the lower half of the walls to add texture and visual interest, and used the same paint color on both the paneling and walls.

To balance out the pink, we opted for darker tones when selecting tile. A black and white floral hexagon mosaic tile adds a playful touch to the floor, while being an appropriate choice for the age of the building. For the shower walls, we used a large format matte black rectangular tile stacked in a horizontal grid pattern. We knew this option would be budget-friendly to install and that black grout would be a low maintenance choice for rental tenants.
A walnut mid-century modern inspired vanity adds warmth to the space and fit perfectly with the bathroom's existing baseboard heater. We chose a brushed brass faucet, bathroom accessories, and globe sconce to complement the warm wood tones of the vanity.

A black arched mirror ties in with the tile and adds contrast to the vertical lines of the shiplap paneling. We also found some beautiful accessories at Lowe's for the finishing touches, including a marble-look soap dish, embroidered shower curtain, and modern abstract art.
This bathroom renovation was such a fun project. The dramatic before and afters prove that even with a limited renovation budget and a short timeline, you can create a beautiful and functional bathroom.
